Our common purpose in Mathematics is to provide students with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge which will empower them to become effective problem solvers and to participate in our society competently, confidently and independently.
At Christ the King Primary School, our numeracy program follows the Victorian Curriculum guidelines. Numeracy throughout the school involves four to five hours of dedicated learning time a week.
It includes the following strands:
Number and Algebra, which includes number and place value, the four operations, patterns and algebra, fractions, decimals, money and financial mathematics.
Measurement and Geometry, which includes using units of measurement, space, geometric reasoning, location and transformation.
Statistics and Probability, which includes chance and data representation and interpretation.
At Christ the King, our numeracy program aims to:
- Support the learning of all students
- Promote numeracy as a key life skill
- Develop confidence and knowledge, to enable students to use a wide variety of skills and strategies
- Develop an understanding of concepts, rather than memorisation of facts and procedures
- Engage students in mathematical games and investigations that require thinking and understanding
- Develop a ‘growth mindset’ in students, i.e. that students believe that hard work and correct practice can improve their learning
- Use a variety of assessment strategies, to monitor and plan for student learning
- Engage students in independent and collaborative learning tasks to support the development of mathematics understandings
- Use rich and authentic tasks so that students see the relevance of mathematics
- Instil a love of learning mathematics
- Provide a variety of learning opportunities to enable students to problem solve, reason and take risks
- Use ‘hands on’ resources to assist students in developing their understanding
- Provide opportunities for students to work in small focus groups
- Recognise the vital role literacy plays in the development of numeracy.
