Pilgrimage in the Footsteps of St. Paul – Greece and Turkey

I have just returned from a very special journey. For 16 days, I travelled with 27 school principals from the West, following the footsteps of St. Paul through Greece and Turkey. We visited many ancient cities where Paul preached the Gospel and helped build the early Church.

Where Paul Walked and Preached

Our journey started in Athens, the capital of Greece. We stood near the Parthenon and climbed Mars Hill (Areopagus). This is the place where Paul spoke to the philosophers about the “unknown god” (Acts 17). From the hill, we looked over the city and thought about Paul’s courage and faith.

We then sailed through the beautiful Greek islands. We stopped in Mykonos, Santorini, and Patmos. On Patmos, we visited the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St. John received the Book of Revelation. Even though Paul did not go there, it reminded us of the other apostles and the early days of the Church.

The House of Mary in Ephesus

As we celebrate Mothers Day this week I would like to share with you one of the most powerful moments of our pilgrimage. St. Paul spent more than two years in Ephesus, Turkey,  teaching and preaching (Acts 19). But it was our visit to the House of the Virgin Mary that touched many hearts.

According to tradition, Mary, the mother of Jesus, came to Ephesus with St. John the Apostle. After Jesus died on the cross, He asked John to take care of His mother. In a small stone house on a quiet hill, many people believe Mary lived her final years. We visited this peaceful place, prayed in the small chapel, and asked Mary to pray for our families, schools, and communities. Outside, we tied ribbons with our prayers on the Wishing Wall, a local tradition.

This visit helped me deepen my understanding of the two strong foundations of our faith: Paul’s bold mission in the city and Mary’s gentle, prayerful presence on the hill. The Church grew not just through powerful preaching, but also through love, faith, and quiet strength.

I look forward to sharing more stories and photos with the CTK Community from this life-changing journey.
